Palm Springs Travel Guide: Reviews, photos, & videos

Once a Rat Pack hangout, Palm Springs has seen a revival in recent years, with a new generation of Hollywood celebs discovering this retro-chic oasis in the California desert. With its mid-century architecture, piano bars playing Sinatra tunes, and landmarks such as Elvis’ desert home, Palm Springs retains its authenticity, despite an influx of visitors and city-wide condo developments. Practice your swing at one of the area’s more than 100 golf courses, or the city’s almost equal number of tennis clubs.

Hike along the 100 miles of rugged desert trails in Indian Canyons, a park managed by the Agua Caliente tribe. Shop for mid-century modern treasures—furniture, lighting and decorative pieces—in the many vintage furniture shops downtown. Explore over 50 miles of alpine forest trails in Mount San Jacinto State Park, and take the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway 8,500 feet up to the top of Mount San Jacinto itself. Take a walking tour of private homes by prominent mid-century architects and go barhopping along Palm Canyon Drive, where old and new, kitschy and trendy bars cater to a straight and gay clientele.

Soaking up the Sun in Palm Springs, Ca

    Palm Springs, CA, USA

Two hours away from Los Angeles, Palm Springs is close enough but not too far away to be the perfect weekend road trip of relaxation. Cruising down the main drag, Palm Canyon Drive, there are an abundance of fashionable boutiques and tempting eateries in this quaint town. In the past, the oasis in the desert claimed the fame of having the most swimming pools in the country. Pool-side resorts are still a prominent presence and provide plenty of modern celebrity-style accommodations complete with adjoining golf courses. Snowbirds flock in the peak winter season to this palm tree-studded settlement to escape the cold of their hometowns. In the summer time, a break from the heat is easily found on the largest rotating aerial tramway in the world. An eight and a half minute ride into the skies ends in the Mount San Jacinto State Park west of Palm Springs proper. Well above sea level, the temperature drops significantly and the vistas are breath-taking.

    Star Gazing, Shopping, and Sunshine

The amazing thing about going to Palm Springs is that it can be 50 degrees when you leave Knoxville, Tennessee. But the moment the plane lands in California, you can feel yourself grow 30 degrees warmer. The coat you were carrying is now a discarded piece of luggage, and the frown you were wearing has miraculously turned into a smile as radiant as the Palm Springs sunshine. If the eclectic restaurants and fabulous outlets shops aren’t enough to tempt you, the casinos will keep your spirits rolling along through the night as you bet against the house. Speaking of houses, this is the place to check out the stunning dwellings of the stars! Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope, Elvis Presley, and dozens of others have had homes in Palm Springs. While there, make sure to take in a show. The Plaza Theater showcases the Palm Spring Follies, a vaudeville-style performance featuring cast members ranging in age from 59 – 84 years!

    Lots to do

I went to Palm Springs in 2001. Admittedly, I'm not the type of visitor that Palm Springs seems to cater to but it was not difficult to find things that did interest me. First priority was sunshine and Palm Springs had plenty of that. One day we took the Palm Springs Aerial Tram into Mount San Jacinto State Park and decided to hike San Jacinto peak. The hike took about 4 hours one way but the summit offered rewarding views from the second highest point in California. There are shorter and less strenuous trails to hike at the top of the tram -- 54 miles total. I also spent a half day wandering the Living Desert Zoo and Garden. The zoo focuses on presenting and preserving desert species from around the world. I don't golf and am not much of a shopper but Palm Springs kept me busy!

A beautiful escape 365 days of the year!

Palm Springs has long been a weekend destination for Angelenos like myself, and a winter escape for folks from Northern climes. Native inhabitants of the valley which includes Palm Springs believed that the area had magical healing powers. After a weekend here, you'll believe in magic, too. Surrounded by beautiful majestic mountains and lulled by the quieter pace of life here, you'll forget all your troubles. I think I started looking at property to buy after my second visit, and soon found myself spending every available weekend here, hiking, biking, and relaxing. Interestingly, I don't golf or gamble, but these are two popular diversions here that my guests enjoy. In the winter, I enjoy seeing snow on the mountaintops while it's still 70 at ground level. In the summer, I enjoy the absence of humidity, and the fact that I don't need to make a reservation at any of the restaurants!
