Cancun Travel Guide: Reviews, photos, & videos
If your image of Cancún is jam-packed beaches and girls gone wild on spring break, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to find a quieter—and remarkably beautiful—side to this resort town at the very tip of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, along the Mayan Riviera. Sure, the megahotels crowding the Zona Hotelera—thirteen miles of hotels, malls and theme restaurants (is that a Hooters?) along the coastline—are far from charming, but venture in to downtown Cancún and you’ll find colorful buildings and restaurants with wind-swept terraces serving innovative takes on traditional Mexican cuisine. Go for a stroll around Parque las Palapas, a downtown park where local artists tend to gather and where there always seems to be a festival of some kind. Take a15-minute ferry ride to the small island of Isla Mujeres, where the Mayans worshipped the moon goddess Ixchel. Explore the coral reefs in the crystal-clear waters around the island and visit the rehabilitation center for sea turtles on the island's south side.
