San Diego Travel Guide: Reviews, photos, & videos

Downtown San Diego has seen a tremendous change in recent years. The once-seedy Gaslamp Quarter is now a hopping neighborhood of upscale restaurants, bars and clubs in restored Victorian commercial buildings. The surrounding neighborhoods—East Village, Hillcrest and Little Italy—have seen a similar lift, with exclusive boutiques and new residents in loft apartments. Check out the Art & Design District in Little Italy for designer fashions, home decoration and contemporary furniture. Pick up walking-tour map of architectural sights and work your way through the Gaslamp Quarter and the neighboring areas.

Go for a stroll along the walking path in the city’s busy harbor, past trawlers and aircraft carriers. Explore the 1,200-acre Balboa Park—the country’s largest urban cultural park and home to 15 museums, beautiful gardens, performing arts venues, and last, but not least, the San Diego Zoo. Check out the collection of 60s and 70s Pop art, and art from California and the San Diego region, at the Museum of Contemporary Art in La Jolla. Strut your stuff at Bohemian Pacific Beach, a two-mile stretch of a total 70 miles of county beaches, and watch the surfers from the end of Crystal Pier. And then of course, there’s Shamu. If you just ran into Shamu in Orlando, don’t be confused: Shamu is actually played by several orcas at SeaWorld’s different parks (Ssh! Don’t tell the kids), and he’s sure to be at Sea World San Diego when you get there.

Southwest Airlines makes up for a third of those arrivals and departures, and United Airlines/United Express and American Airlines/American Eagle together make up another quarter. Metro bus provides service from downtown San Diego to the airport, stopping between Terminals 1 and 2 and the Commuter Terminal. Balboa Park

At 1,200 acres, Balboa Park is the country’s largest urban cultural park and home to 15 museums, beautiful gardens, performing arts venues, and last, but not least, the San Diego Zoo. Many of the museums are housed in baroque Spanish Colonial Revival buildings and most are linked by the Prado, a pedestrian walkway, and, for the sightseeing-weary, a free tram.

San Diego Zoo

The San Diego Zoo, in Balboa Park, is most known for its seven pandas, resting in the shade of tall bamboos and checking out visitors with composed expressions. Traipse the Monkey Trail, and visit the Absolutely Apes exhibit, where orangutans and siamangs show off less poise than the panda. Make sure you visit Wild Animal Park, which is also part of the zoo. Check out www.sandiegozoo.org for more information.

Frowns are as rare as shoes

San Diego conjures up images of the beach, palm trees and sunny days for starters (there is a few!) Then maybe Sea World and Balboa Park (famous zoo and the Shamu), possibly historic Old Town (street tacos, do I need to say more?!), the glammed-up scraper-framed Gaslamp Quarter and the suave Del Mar Racetrack (where a woman wearing an over-sized hat is chic). All things not to be missed. But, San Diego, no matter the big-city attractions, has the small-city feel within a bustling, urban metropolis. And, to my surprise, authentic small cities actually exist where locals will say "good morning", the farmers market is where people actually buy produce, and everyone worships the beach. Just a hop skip and breath-taking, view-packed, train ride away, a mere 20 miles to the north of downtown San Diego, sits Encinitas. The California Coast Highway runs thru and creates a palm-lined downtown city center dotted with art boutiques, restaurants and bars and even a meditation garden. The beach is the heartbeat of this town which is evident once all 170-plus steps are navigated at Swami's Point, just below the gardens. Once well below the Coast Highway and toes in the sand, thoughts of city-life fade with the panorama of surfers, frolicking children, turquoise waves and house-dabbled bluffs afar. Frowns are as rare as shoes and it becomes all too evident that San Diego, and all it encompasses from Oceanside to Imperial Beach, isn't about the attractions or the weather, it is all about the beach.

Good as it gets for California!

While I may be partially bias because of having spent my childhood in San Diego, I recommend that anyone looking for a quick local getaway to look into San Diego. There is something for everybody in this town. From afternoon visits to the world-famous San Diego Zoo and San Diego’s own Balboa Park to evenings in the Gaslamp Quarter enjoying world-class dining, San Diego appeals to all tastes. Along with good restaurants and entertaining tourist attractions, living in this town is a whole new tier of travel pleasures. Whether it’s coastal property in Point Loma or a suburban home in Lemon Grove, San Diego offers homes for all tastes. While it may be expensive to the casual traveler to afford property here, the sights, sounds, and pleasures of America’s finest city are hard to come by. Personal recommendations include the Old Town Mexican Café not far from down town.

What's not to love about San Diego. Beautiful beaches, happy palm trees, amazing zoo, cute little old town area. The pace of life is so chill. The moment you arrive, you feel like you are on vacation.

Where the Surf Meets the Turf...

San Diego has so many appealing tourist activities that some visitors find it hard to choose between them all. But, slightly off the beaten tourist path is Del Mar racetrack, just 17 miles north of San Diego on the coast, and home to some of the best horse racing this country has to offer. The track was started in 1937 as a partnership between the actors Bing Crosby, Jimmy Durante, Pat O'Brien, and Seabiscuit owner Charles Howard. Throughout the '40s and '50s, the racetrack flourished because of the partners' dedication to the sport and their Hollywood connections. Today the track continues to provide some of the best horse racing in the United States and good sporting entertainment. Del Mar only has racing dates from July to August, when the weather is gorgeous and the nearby Pacific Ocean is pristine - perfect for spending the early afternoon at the beach, or combing the shops and restaurants of the charming nearby community of Rancho Santa Fe. This summer, Del Mar unveiled its new racing surface called Polytrack, a mixture of recycled materials (including old tennis shoes, tires, and sand) that is reportedly less harmful to equine athletes' legs and joints. So next time you visit San Diego, heed the bugler's call to the post and head off to the races!

Are You Alone In The House?

    08/23/2008

    San Diego, CA, USA

Ever sunny San Diego has a deep dark secret…GHOSTS! Hotels, houses, even ships located in and around San Diego hold mysterious and unexplained phenomena. Two of the most popular sites for the gleeful ghost hunter include The Whaley House and The Horton Grand Hotel. The Whaley House was built back in 1857, right on the top of the old public hanging grounds, where many a man was hung for his crimes. Both Mr. and Mrs. Whaley have been known to put in an appearance, the latter usually seen in the garden or a downstairs room. The Horton Grand Hotel is an incredible Victorian hotel. Constructed in 1886 right on the spot of a former brothel in the old Red Light District the hotel now holds the ghost of a man in room 309. Guests awaken to bed shaking and lights turn off and on. Muffled sounds of card playing can be heard from the empty, vacant room. One report states that a group of Victorian garbed ghosts glided down the staircase. San Diego’s alluring history and long list of alleged ghostly places is just one of the many more unusual things to do in this otherwise pleasant coastal city.

The Best Cali has to Offer!

Imagine the ocean at your front door, breath taking mountain views, a nightlife that rivals anywhere else in the world, and finally perfect weather all year round. Does this sound too good to be true? Well, its not, and I’m talking about San Diego, CA, a US destination that no one should leave off their travel list. A city that continues to be strongly influenced by the Spanish and Portuguese traditions brought over by its first settlers, San Diego is unlike any other large city in California. As opposed to sprawled out, commercial metropolises, San Diego is a breath of fresh air for anyone who prefers unique dining opportunities and intimate shopping boutiques. Finally, one cannot leave out the numerous beaches the city has to offer, ranging from large sandy ocean fronts that are perfect for lounging in the sun, to rocky cliffs that offer unparalleled views of the Pacific.

San Diego - the pearl in the oyster

    07/14/2008

    100%

    San Diego, CA, USA

San Diego, unlike most big city destinations, is different. The weather here is ideal year-round. No snow, hurricanes, or oppressive heat. In January we left freezing Colorado and the next evening found ourselves looking out over beautiful San Diego at sunset from the deck of a cruise ship, wearing light sweaters. So many attractions are centered on San Diego Bay, an easy stroll down Broadway from the city center. We Baby Boomers just love convenience. Even the airport is near. The Amtrak Pacific Surfliner passenger train terminal is only a few yards from the harbor entrance. Tijuana, Mexico is 20 miles away to the south. We’ve taken a cruise, been splashed by Shamu, walked the zoo, and shopped in the Old Town Historic District. San Diego is definitely a cut-above and we‘ll keep going back. If the world is our oyster, San Diego is the pearl.
