Destin Travel Guide: Reviews, photos, & videos

It was how big? In Destin, home of Florida’s largest charter fishing fleet, you’ll have plenty of chances to add to your fishing stories. The town, in the northwest corner of Florida, has grown from a small village dependent on commercial fishing, to a resort town known for its sport fishing. There are still enough commercial boats trawling the Gulf of Mexico outside Destin to supply the city’s restaurants with fresh seafood, but the big business these days is the charter boats bringing tourists out to sea in search of marlin and grouper hiding in man-made reefs on the ocean floor. The town’s marlin tournaments bring lots of spectators and lively betting. Fishing’s not your thing? See what you can catch at the nation's largest designer outlet center instead.

Prefer the beach? Head to the Blue Wave Certified beaches of South Walton, where a 26-mile stretch of pristine coastline has earned the certificate based on stringent criteria for water quality, beach conditions, and habitat conservation. Did the work of pulling in a 25-pound grouper make you hungry? Sit down at one of the dockside cafés in the old waterfront, where the air smells like fried fish and salt water, and order some smoked yellow-fin tuna and stuffed oysters while you watch the pelicans play in the water.

    Quiet.Relaxing.Getaway

Destin is home to some of the whitest and quietest beaches in the country. I have been visiting with my family since I was born. I never really realized what a gem it was until the past few years I have vacationed there. I love the fact that I can go and simply relax. The beaches are never overcrowded, so I am always able to find my own spot in the sand to get away from it all. Since, the beaches there are relatively low-key, it offers a great place for me to bring entertain groups of people without paying an astronomical price for a week’s stay. My family and I still make at least one trip each summer out to Destin. It is cool to see the same families returning year after year as it helps retain that Southern flavor of hospitality that helps keep the area friendly, safe and fun.

    Discovering the Royal Reds

For a while, I thought the vacation was a mistake. Using an expiring airline voucher, I flew down to Florida’s panhandle to escape Michigan’s winter. What I got, instead, was day after day of cold rain. Traveling west to the Alabama’s Gulf Coast, also known as the “Redneck Riviera,” I found myself in a restaurant where my trip took a turn for the better. December might not be northern Florida’s ideal time, weatherwise. But it happens to be practically the only time to taste the Royal Red Shrimp. Only caught in some of the Atlantic’s deepest waters during the winter, these large crustaceans are sweeter than the average shrimp. In fact, they more closely resemble lobster – right down to the melted butter that comes with every plate of steamed Royal Reds, as they are commonly known. After I had eaten every shrimp, I had totally forgotten about the rain.

    Distinctly Destin

    Destin, FL, USA

Located on what's known as Florida's Emerald Coast, Destin is a true Florida gem. I'm lucky enough to be able to travel throughout Florida on a regular basis, which gives me the opportunity to check out some really cool places. Destin is one of those locations that you draws you in with its sugar sand beaches (some of the world's whitest, by the way) and keeps you coming back to experience its other attractions. Choose your pleasure - it's all here -outdoor recreation, resorts, shopping - Destin has something for all types of visitors. Originally, Destin was just a small fishing village, but over the last thirty years the area has seen tremendous growth making it the place to visit for nearly five million people annually. Anglers, don't worry, Destin still is famous for being the "the World's Luckiest Fishing Village" and home to Florida's largest fishing vessel fleet. You don't have to even have a boat to partake in Destin's fantastic fishing, cast a line out at beach pier or jetty, and reel in your catch!

The secret is in the sand

Seriously. A lot of Florida locations have nice beaches. But the sand on Destin’s long, beautiful, beaches is fine and brilliantly white. If there was a market for bottled sand, Destin sand would outsell all other brands. We discovered Destin on April 21st 1999. The day was perfect – warm, light breeze, and sunny. We had the Henderson Beach State Park parking lot to ourselves and the beach was almost completely deserted. The following year we went back and bought a duplex. On a wall of the realtor’s offices was a display of three dozen small glass vials of beach sand from around the world – each labeled - Hawaii, Bali, Seychelles, Fiji, and so on. For color and fineness of grain the Destin sand stood out above all others. The best part is, even on the hottest day, the sand doesn’t get too hot to walk on. Add this perfect sugar-like sand to the emerald water and safe, family-friendly swimming, and Destin has inevitably become one of the most popular vacation spots along the entire Florida panhandle. After several enjoyable visits we eventually moved to Colorado and sold our property there, but it remains one of our favorite destinations.

    A Nice Beach Weekend

    07/14/2008

A doable drive from Atlanta, South Florida and Alabama, Destin, Fla., is a good place for a weekend beach trip. It's frequented by teens, young professionals and families looking for sun, fun and sand. The beaches are generally clean, and there are plenty of nightlife and dining options to keep you entertained. This is also a good place for water sports, from jet-skiing and banana boating to sailing and kayaking. Destin is also close enough to many other beach communities, such as WaterColor and Seaside, that day or evening trips by car are easy. Try to stay away during Spring Break, as Destin attracts quite a crowd of partiers, although it's not nearly as crazy as Panama City. Destin's weather is best in the spring, as the summer can get very hot, but as long as you're planning on staying at the beach, the heat is bearable. It doesn't snow here, but it can get pretty chilly in the winter; not the best time for beach-goers.
