Destin Travel Guide: Reviews, photos, & videos
It was how big? In Destin, home of Florida’s largest charter fishing fleet, you’ll have plenty of chances to add to your fishing stories. The town, in the northwest corner of Florida, has grown from a small village dependent on commercial fishing, to a resort town known for its sport fishing. There are still enough commercial boats trawling the Gulf of Mexico outside Destin to supply the city’s restaurants with fresh seafood, but the big business these days is the charter boats bringing tourists out to sea in search of marlin and grouper hiding in man-made reefs on the ocean floor. The town’s marlin tournaments bring lots of spectators and lively betting. Fishing’s not your thing? See what you can catch at the nation's largest designer outlet center instead.
Prefer the beach? Head to the Blue Wave Certified beaches of South Walton, where a 26-mile stretch of pristine coastline has earned the certificate based on stringent criteria for water quality, beach conditions, and habitat conservation. Did the work of pulling in a 25-pound grouper make you hungry? Sit down at one of the dockside cafés in the old waterfront, where the air smells like fried fish and salt water, and order some smoked yellow-fin tuna and stuffed oysters while you watch the pelicans play in the water.
