Tampa Travel Guide: Reviews, photos, & videos

In no apparent hurry, the Hillsborough River slowly makes it way through the quaint neighborhoods of downtown Tampa, past riverbanks lined with shops and outdoors bars. At the turn of the 20th century, Tampa's economy was dominated by cigar factories. In Ybor City the legacy remains, with cigar stores selling hand-rolled stogies. The more than 150 exotic cats—including lions, leopards, and pumas—at Big Cat Rescue, a 45-acre tree-filled sanctuary, all come with a story: some were seized in drugs raids, some retired from the circus. If you can snag some tickets, witness the spectacle of die-hard fans in Kiss-like makeup supporting the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at their enormous arena, complete with a fake pirate ship looming above. A few miles west of Tampa, close to St. Petersburg, soft sand beaches give way to the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico. If you’re traveling with kids, they’ll likely insist on a stop at Busch Gardens.

Big Cat Rescue

Retired circus performers even rescued exotics. Yup, these fantastic felines have all found a home here at the lush and green Big Cat Rescue. Think Sanctuary - not zoo! No wandering willy-nilly here. The animals always come first, which is a good thing! There are several different tours offered, each one is guided and takes place at specific times, so plan ahead or be left behind! See the big cats like you have never seen them before - and support a good cause!

Mosi Museum

When most museums make the claim "It's fun for all ages," I tend to be a bit skeptical. Finding that right balance of fun for 5 year olds, 25 year olds and 55 year olds is surprisingly tough! However, the Museum of Science and Industry in Tampa (near Sarasota) has managed to strike that balance with a relative ease. There's the Kids In Charge! (which is the Children's Science Center), the IMAX Dome Theatre (the only dome IMAX in Florida) and the unique Disasterville, featuring WeatherQuest (where kids can put on a fake news broad cast with authentic equipment and a real green screen.) Of course, what would a museum be without a planetarium and the Saunders planetarium is second to none (and the only one in Tampa). Also make sure to check out the Coleman Science Works Theater which shows an astounding 3D film about the sun called - simply enough - 3D SUN. And who doesn't love butterflies? Answer - everyone loves butterflies. So make sure to check out the Bioworks Butterfly Garden - which is home to thousands of these gorgeous flying delicacies. See - it really is fun for all ages.

    My personal Florida favorite

I’m not embarrassed to say that the Tampa area is my favorite region in Florida. To me, it’s a real-life version of Vice City (of Grand Theft Auto notoriety), except without all the crime and violence. In fact, most of the beaches are retirement havens. But there’s something about Clearwater Beach in particular. Every night there’s a festival on the pier, where vendors sell crafts and performers draw sizeable crowds. The lack of waves in the Gulf of Mexico is more than made up for by the incredible sunsets. I highly recommend the Frenchy’s restaurants, featuring over a dozen sandwiches and entrees with fresh-caught grouper (who would have thought that a grouper reuben would be so tasty?). I never get tired of the Adventure Island waterpark (right next to Busch Gardens), even though the slides don’t seem nearly as scary now as when I was a kid.

Outstanding Beaches in the Tampa Bay Area

Situated on the Gulf of Mexico, the Tampa Bay area has some of the finest beaches found anywhere. I frequently make the hour and a half drive to relax at Fort Desoto County Park, an 1,100-acre group of small interconnected islands. There's hiking and biking trails, great facilities, and plenty of places to enjoy a bit of privacy. The park is named after the World War II era fort that is situated on the grounds, and it's on the National Register of Historic Places. For the ultimate spring break destination, visit Clearwater beach. You'll find plenty to do here, and during the peak season, this beach is a 24-hour party! In contrast, just a few miles offshore of Clearwater Beach, you'll discover beautiful, rugged, and remote Caladesi Island State Park, America's top beach for 2008. Come discover the great beaches in the Tampa/Saint Petersburg area!

    Tampa's friendly folk

Tampa is a nice place to visit. The beaches are fairly clean, the city is a good size so you can explore without getting overwhelmed, and the people are generally more down-to-earth than they are in South Florida. Ybor City can be kind of trashy, though, so unless you're just looking for a crazy, bachelor party-style night on the town, visit other parts of Tampa instead.

Tampa is a great place to go. The beaches are fun and and you can walk on and off the beach with your booooooze. There is also another phenomenal part of the are named Ebore City. If you want to party this is a great spot. You can walk down this strip and find any kind of club or bar you want. So, beaches by day and clubbin at night. It's great!!!
