Eastern Shore Travel Guide: Reviews, photos, & videos

Crab cakes, anyone? No dish is as linked to Maryland—and the Chesapeake in particular—as crab cakes. Learn the difference between boardwalk (stuffing-filled and deep fried, served on a sandwich) and restaurant-style (all-lump crab meat served on a platter). After lunch, go antique shopping and admire the gingerbread trim houses, or visit Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge in Maryland, which serves as a 23,000-acre rest stop for migrating birds.

Summers in the Bay are one long regatta. Boaters come from all over the East Coast to take part in the Annual Screwpile Lighthouse Challenge Regatta, the Bay’s premier sailing regatta held in July every year.

Cute, quaint St. Michael’s - perfect family getaway

When my mother-in-law moved to Maryland a couple of years ago, I had never really experienced the Chesapeake or Maryland’s shore line. Boy has that changed this summer! As people can attest, Maryland is known for its crabs (I love crab cakes) and boating, but there are so many picturesque communities it is hard not walk around and sightsee. St. Michael’s, in particular, was especially beautiful. The town is rich in history, and is especially known for fooling the British during the War of 1812. Historical markers are all over. After lunch on a Sunday by the water, my family and I walked around town. Tiny shops and a delicious ice cream parlor make it a perfect weekend getaway. Afterwards, instead of taking the conventional route home, we took the ferryboat to Oxford and looped around some more. St. Michael’s is a beautiful town and is one stop along the Eastern Shore I can’t wait to go back.

I just can't help but have crabs on my mind when I head out to the Chesapeake! Why you ask? Because fresh crabs are to die for! And yes, those crabs are fresh as can be on the Eastern Shore! Definitely makes the drive worthwhile. Last year, a friend of mine Marc invited us out on his boat for a day trip on the Chesapeake. The weather couldn't have been more perfect! We cruised around on his boat until we found this calm inlet where we anchored and hopped in the water for a swim. The day really was picture perfect! Pop up guy (see pic below) - Dan - would pop up from the bar down below to make sure our drinks were refreshed. Every boat needs a pop up guy! Just before sunset, we boated over to Annapolis only to find there was no place to park our boat on the dock. We had to take the boat home and drive to Annapolis for dinner. We didn't exactly have crab for dinner, but we did have fresh raw fish...yes you guessed it! Sushi, which was really yummy too! Will catch the crabs next time! Mmmm!
