Austria Travel Guide: Reviews, photos, & videos
When most people think of Austria they think of two things: sausage and Arnold Schwarzenegger – both large pieces of meat. However, there’s a whole wonderful world people discover when they actually venture into this land locked alpine country in Central Europe: a land of scenic landscapes flanked by the Alps; a land of bustling cities with magnificent architecture and friendly citizens; a land of history and beauty. Heavily influenced by their German neighbors to the North and their Swiss neighbors to the West, Austria combines the best of both of these unique cultures and geographies to create a vacation destination unlike anywhere else. The capital city of Vienna is the ideal place to start for those looking to get a crash course in Austrian history, architecture and – of course – food. The sausage is definitely the main draw but many are enticed by the delicious coffee, wines and beers made by the local cafes, pubs and wineries. Salzburg is another unique city that combines natural beauty and local culture to create a wholly original experience.
Ever seen the Sound of Music? Well, the lush green country side Julie Andrews famously declared “The Hills Are Alive” is located here and there are numerous tours that take willing customers to various locations from the classic musical. Venture into the central town area and check out Schloss Hellbrunn which was once an archbishop’s summer palace and is now a vibrant park featuring a children’s playground, a cold wading pool and vast scenic gardens perfect for a picnic or an after noon stroll. Salzburg is also a great location from which to venture out into the stunning Austrian Alps. Those who want to truly escape to the Alps should visit Schröcken - an alpine town located in the district of Bregenz in Vorarlberg. Composed of lush green rolling hills set against the snow capped Alps, Schröcken provides visitors with a stress free escape into the wonderful world of the Alps. For those looking for the ideal summer destination, head about five miles west of Krems to the quaint town of Dürnstein – a town located along the Danube River that embodies the word “serenity.” Composed of terraced vineyards and aging fortified walls, this small Danube wine town allows visitors to gain unique picture of small town Austrian life. Hopefully now people will see beyond the Wiener schnitzel and the Governator and appreciate Austria for its true beauty and culture.
