Ambergris Caye Travel Guide: Reviews, photos, & videos

For those looking for the perfect introduction into the gorgeous country of Belize look no further than Ambergris Caye. Known as the gateway to Belize, Ambergris Caye is the largest island in Belize and is typically the main vacation destination for world-weary travelers in need of some classic Caribbean respite. Located in the northeast section of Belize, Ambergris Caye boasts incredible diving and scuba diving opportunities as well as a near perfect climate and glorious beaches dotted with pristine palm trees and mutli-colored sunsets. The real estate in Ambergris Caye is simply stunning! Make sure to look into the numerous Amergris Caye vacation properties or – for those looking to really live large – a scenic Ambergris Caye beach house just a few leisurely stops from the azure blue waters of the Caribbean! In terms of things to do and places to see, Ambergris Caye has no shortages!

Check out San Pedro Town first – the largest settlement and the only real town in Ambergris. For those with an extreme amount of daredevil in them, check out San Pedro’s offering of sky diving during the winter months – apparently it’s quite the draw these days. The history buff will delight in the rich Mayan culture of the region and the possibility of exploring such impressive Mayan relics like Altun Ha and Xunantunich. In need of some Beach therapy? The Ambergris Caye public beaches provide some of the most spectacular scenery in the world making the July/August 2008 issue of Islands Magazine feature Ambergris Caye as one of the top ten islands in the world! And – of course – for those looking to do a little scuba diving the presence of the Belize Barrier Reef – the second largest in the world after Australia’s Great Barrier Reef – provides some of the most unique underwater experiences the world over.

Shark and Ray Alley

"I must be out of my mind," you think when your guide points out the giant shadows in the eight-foot deep water and ladles a glop of chum over the side of the boat. Despite your raging instinct for self-preservation, you strap on the flippers, put the snorkel in your mouth and jump right in. Call it a leap of faith, for you are rewarded with an unforgettable and, did I mention, SAFE adventure. Shark and Ray alley, off Ambergris Caye in Belize, combines the brilliance of a coral reef, tropical warm waters, and yes, an abundance of nurse sharks and several species of ray. The first time a six foot nurse shark swims up to your nose for a look, you may be thinking, "beautiful, fascinating, intimidating… though magnificent." Two words: simply thrilling.

Belize Barrier Reef

As I sat on the beach on Ambergris Caye, sipping a Pina Colada and pondering the meaning of nothing exceptional, I leaned over to my wife and asked what the white strip of frothy sea running parallel to the shore was. She said it was the reef, and I was sold. Belizeans are extremely proud of their Barrier Reef, and rightly so: it is part of the second largest reef system in the world. But facts and figures are boring so let's cut to the chase: snorkeling, scuba, diving, coral, SENSATIONAL AQUATIC WILDLIFE! No matter how you choose to get wet, the time you spend with the reef is amazing. It's an up close and personal experience with a remarkable ecosystem that is becoming rarer and rarer. The colours of the fish and coral in the crystal-clear water will stay with you forever. Life does not get richer than this, and the Belize Barrier Reef is an absolute treasure.
