St John Travel Guide: Reviews, photos, & videos
A ten-minute ferry ride from St. Thomas takes you to St. John, the smallest of the three main U.S. Virgin Islands. Much quieter than St. Thomas, more than half of St. John is a national park, donated by philanthropist Laurance Rockefeller. With so little land available for development, real estate in St. John is pricey. It is, however, a nature lover’s paradise, with a diverse flora and lots of hiking and biking trails. The park protection extends out to the offshore reefs, which offer some remarkably diverse and accessible snorkeling. Orange soldierfish and lacy-finned squirrelfish play hide-and-seek in the shallow reef system. Stroll alongside turquoise waters with your honey at Honeymoon Beach. Discover the beaches only accessible by foot along the southwest side. Visit the little town of Cruz Bay with its large boat harbor. Learn about St. John’s farming past at the 18th century Annaberg Sugar Plantation ruins. Discover Hawks Nest Beach, where the sand is so white and water so light and clear, it’s hard to tell where the sand stops and the water starts.
