Marrakech Travel Guide: Reviews, photos, & videos
Originating from the words Mur akush which means “Land of God,” the city of Marrakesh is split up into two distinct parts: an old fortified city (the Medina) and an adjacent modern city (Gueliz). Often referred to as the “Red City,” Marrakesh is the third largest city in Morocco and is located in the stunning region near the foothills of the snow capped Atlas Mountains. For the first time visitor here’s a sage piece of advice: the Medina (old town) boasts packed streets, local shops and fascinating insights into the town’s history and culture while the Gueliz (new town) is composed of more upscale, modern restaurants and stores. For those interested in checking out the Marrakesh real estate scene, make sure to explore the Medina section near Dar Sara for some stunning Marrakesh vacation properties.
Then head over to the Djemaa El-Fna to experience the quintessential Marrakesh night life. Packed to the brim with musicians, dancers, story tellers and the occasional snake charmer, this town square - located in the middle of the Medina – is one of the most unique people watching locations the world over and also boasts a wide variety of quaint shops selling authentic Moroccan wares. Make sure to walk to the nearby souks (market) for a more expansive selection of unique Moroccan ware as well as some fantastic bargaining opportunities! Then head over to the nearby valley of the Ourika River in the Atlas Mountains for some stunning scenery including the gorgeous waterfalls of Beni Mellal. After gazing upon the beauty of the Atlas Mountains and experiencing the unique local culture, most people tend to understand why Marrakesh is known as “Land of God.”
