Playa del Coco Travel Guide: Reviews, photos, & videos
Once an outpost of die-hard surfers and backpackers undeterred by the five-hour drive from the country’s main airport in San Jose, Coco Beach has seen a spike in visitors since the opening of the new airport in Liberia. In the fairly undeveloped Coco Beach, howler monkeys vie for your attention from the top of palm trees and audacious raccoon families beg for scraps at your table. In the shallow waters covering the reef between the cliffs at Ocotal Beach and an islet just off the shore, vibrant starfish rest on equally colorful coral. Set on one of the cliffs and with an amazing 270-degree view of the ocean below, Ocotal Beach Resort is a wonderful place to watch the sunset over dinner. The resort also hosts a lot of weddings. We’re willing to bet the black sand beaches, the rays brushing by you as you explore the ocean reefs, and the dolphins swimming alongside your jetski will have you declare your eternal love as well. Need to feel that same type of adrenaline rush on the ocean? Well, we’ve got some good news – Playa del Coco boasts a bevy of oceanic opportunities ranging from scuba diving in the clear waters of Playa Hermosa or Playa Ocotal, surfing the intense waves at Playa Flamingo or even partaking in some serious sport fishing in the lovely waters at Tamarindo.
