St Lucia Travel Guide: Reviews, photos, & videos

This mountainous island of waterfalls, tropical forests and sheltered coves is about to be transformed: several high-end resorts with celebrity-endorsed golf courses are set to open in 2008 and 2009. Jack Nicklaus Golf Club St. Lucia with accompanying resort is due to open in 2008. Westin Le Paradis St. Lucia Beach and Golf Resort, also expected to open in 2008, will feature a course designed by Greg Norman. Not to be left out, Arnold Palmer will have his course at the Ritz-Carlton when it opens in late 2009. Even if you’re not a golfer, you’ll find plenty to do on St. Lucia. Discover the island’s animal life on hiking trails through the rain forests. Explore the island’s past at former sugar and cocoa plantations. Feel the sand under your feet on pristine Caribbean beaches. Go windsurfing on the less-developed Atlantic side of the island.

You Can't Go Wrong with Mick Jaggers Tropical Hideaway

    St. Lucia

St Lucia is 239 square miles of lush, mystical paradise where Mick Jagger comes to muse, and George Forman escapes to perfect the art of low-calorie grilling. Centuries past, France and England fought so adamantly for control of St Lucia’s unique beauty that historians took to proclaiming it as the “Helen of the West Indies.” A diverse and shifting landscape of tropical forest, fertile plantations, and volcanic rock faces dot St. Lucia’s interior, while soft and delicate expanses of black and white sand blanket the periphery. Idyllic, underwater meadows teeming with psychedelic coral and curious organisms give divers a truly once in-a-life time experience. St. Lucia’s best diving is in the waters off of Anse Chastanet, where divers can encounter anything from morays to manta rays. Inland, tourists often congregate at Sulfur Springs, the world’s only “drive through volcano” (though popcorn is not included). At Sulfur Springs, thick clouds of mist and virulent pools of metallic colored mineral deposits blend to induce a hypnotic effect equal to the calm, crystalline surfaces of the Caribbean.

St. Lucia, just another island paradise?

    St. Lucia

We traveled to St. Lucia in February 08. Since we live in the frigid north of Minnesota, by the time we get to the middle of winter, any Caribbean escape is welcome. We have had several such winter travels to a variety of warm climates, but St. Lucia was a special place. First, the island was formed by volcanic eruptions so it is extremely vertical. This topography lends itself to stunning vistas both of the sea from land and also of the island from the sea. If you go, I highly recommend a boat tour to see the island from the water. Even in the drier winter months it is lush, green and gorgeous. This is also the best way to see the world famous pitons. Two connical shaped land formations which spring up out of the sea just of the main coast of the island. It is a stunning picture of caribbean beauty. Along with the rainforests, and neverending hillsides of banana palms, St. Lucia's natural beauty is evident everywhere you look. Not to be outdone by the beauty of their home, the native St.lucians are perhaps the most stunningly beautiful people I've seen in all of the caribbean. They are also among the most friendly and genuine I've met. They will make sure you feel welcome on their island. As for food and accomodations, I can only say that both were fabulous, and a little expensive. We stayed at the windjammer. It is a large resort/condotel built up the side of a cliff, featuring a variety of room options to suite your needs as well as beautiful grounds and good amenities. We had a couple of spa visits which were wonderful, and chartered a day boat trip from their excurions desk. They have two main pools which were always clean and nicely landscaped. They also have a very nice swim beach with a swim raft and large floating rock climbing raft for the kids. If you are looking for long walks on the beach, your best bet is Rodney bay beach. It is reasonably flat and is perhaps a little less than a mile long sprinkled with a few eateries and watering holes. One pleasant surprise on St. Lucia was the food. I am admittedly fond of west indies food, especially the more savory and spicey varieties such as the jerk spices so popular in Jamaica. We sampled a variety of eateries while visiting and by far our favorite was the Coal Pot in Casteries. If you want fresh sea food, no problem, they have you covered. I especially enjoyed the tuna fillet. If you want a steak that reminds you of home, you've come to the right place. I almost never order beef while in the caribbean anymore, just never measures up to my midwestern expectations. Believe me, the tenderloin at Coal Pot, was good midwestern beef. Surprising wine selection, lovely atmosphere, friendly service, but a bit pricey. Most food in St. Lucia was fairly expensive.
