Mykonos Travel Guide: Reviews, photos, & videos

Going to Greece without visiting the islands is like eating a cake and missing out on the icing, the sprinkles and the filling. The islands are where you find all the fun. No other group of islands shows this better than the Cyclades. This cluster of islands in the Aegean Sea has it all—dazzling white buildings and blue-domed churches, sandy beaches and world-famous night life, all at a convenient ferry ride from Athens. If your top priority is sun and fun, head to Mykonos. Visitors don’t come to Mykonos to go sightseeing. They come for the beaches and for what goes on after dark. Long the favorite of gay travelers, Mykonos attracts a rather mixed crowd. Anything goes on this island in the northeast Cyclades. Since the purpose of a visit is the after-dark sights, the best place to stay is in Mykonos town.

At first view, Mykonos town’s myriad of streets seems just impossible to figure out. There doesn’t seem to be a straight street in the whole town. Explanations to this labyrinthine appearance vary. Some say the streets were built in a meandering pattern to break up the wind gusting in from the sea. Others say it was to confuse pirates. Whether meant to confuse pirates or Mother Nature, first-time visitors agree it is indeed confusing. The streets get so narrow, in some places you can reach out and touch both sides of the street. Along the town’s western shore, the stilted houses of the Venetian quarters link the town to the sea. South of the Venetian quarters is another Mykonos landmark, a row of windmills. The best beaches are along the island’s southern shore, some accessible by road and others only by fishing boat.

 Directions

regular ferry takes about six hours from Athens’ main port, in Pireaus, and four hours from Athens’ other port, in Rafina. The high-speed ferry takes about half that time.

Mykonos has an airport for domestic and international flights about 2.5 miles southeast of Mykonos town. Olympic Airways has seven to ten daily flights from Athens to Mykonos, depending on the season. In the summertime, many charter flights fly directly from different points in Europe to Mykonos, and there are also flights between Mykonos and Rhodes and Crete.

    Mykonos, Greece

Never had a chilled can of Coke tasted so good, refreshed so remarkably. My husband and friends relaxed on the boat sailing back to Mykonos from the island of Delos. We had toured the ruins of the ancient mythical island and had the sunburns, parched throats and headaches from the glaring white sun to show for it. I perched at the front of the boat, letting the Mediterranean breeze cool my sweat-slicked skin and gulped the Coke my friend had brought me, quickly, before it could warm up. The main island of Mykonos neared and along with my soda, I drank in the vivid blue roofs and the piles of white buildings, shimmering in the late afternoon heat. This was exactly what I imagined of when I dreamed of Greece. The famous windmills beckoned us and we alighted from the boat, eager to wander the cool shaded lanes of this fantasy island. Despite the throngs of crowds, we savored the contrast in the brilliant plant life abundant on every terrace with the cool white walls. We stopped for gelato as the still-blazing sun slid into the sea, and sighed with pleasure. This warm sea-scented moment, *this* was Mykonos.
