Cannes Travel Guide: Reviews, photos, & videos

So it’s kind of hard to mention Cannes without talking about that tiny little film festival that happens there every year. The Cannes Film Festival – which is the pinnacle of international film making – is an amazing celebration of cinema that occurs every year in late May in this once small fishing village. The most famous and beautiful people (like Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, and Johnny Depp) in the entire world conglomerate in quite possibly the most exquisite spot in all of the South of France to enjoy great cinema, decadent parties and phenomenal scenery. Sounds like heaven right? Well, heaven is kind of a good word to use when describing Cannes. Located on the stunning French Riviera, Cannes is the pure definition of European luxury: high-end boutiques, world class restaurants, prestigious hotels and of course- celebrities, celebrities, celebrities.

For those wanting to check out the high-end real estate in Cannes, you’ll find that there are numerous glamorous Cannes vacation properties and seaside homes in Cannes ideal for the big spender looking to live the high life. Speaking of the highlife – charter a yacht or boat (just in case you don’t already own one) and take a trip out to the gorgeous St. Marguerite Island which is famous for it’s spectacular, tree lined beauty as well for being the island from which it took “the Man in the Iron Mask” 11 years to escape. Then head back to Cannes and check out the Notre-Dame d’Esperance – a pristine Gothic church nestled atop the quaint Suqet hill in old Cannes that dates all the way back to the 14th century. And if you happen to find yourself in Cannes in late May and you see someone who looks like Paris Hilton – well, snap a picture and keep on walking. It’s kind of a normal thing in Cannes.

I admit it, I've been a part of the Los Angeles film industry for 20 years, but I still get a thrill from bandying about the names of celebs I've worked with and touting the indie feature I produced. So CANNES during festival week was my nirvana. I worked for 3 old time publicists (think Brief Encounter, Lawrence of Arabia and Star Wars) and each May I salivated as I made their travel plans. Glaring sun, white umbrellas and red rooftops, sun-kissed bare shoulders and overpowering jasmine perfume-that was Cannes-and when I finally got my chance to step onto (Boulevard de) la Croisette my fantasy was fulfilled as the reality of crushing, loud, sweaty, crowds overwhelmed me. Hollywood has lost its allure, but Cannes retains that "Day of the Locust" veneer. It's luxury and sleaze all at once. The films are second tothe people watching, and I worked hard to glom onto a group of slightly smarmy men (both young and old) and half clad women (20s to 70s) who traipsed from boat to mansion, talking their way into private parties, picking up bags of swag, sucking down champagne and sweet cocktails while remaining endearing and exotic. It's the place of instant friends who you never see after the night of partying. I stayed at a pension 1/2 a mile up a narrow, steep hill from the beach, but it didn't matter because I only slept there. I also didn't bother spending my sucky pittance of a salary on food. In the morning I gulped down a cafe creme and croissant while learning the language of the earnest D and PR girls, ease dropping on execs in pink polo shirts and white Bermudas who threw out ungainly sums and eying chubby young wanna-be directors pitching screenplays. On my last day, worn out from work, film and partying hopping, I took a cab to the Hotel du Cap and sat with my friend on the terrace overlooking a sparkling, azure Mediterranean where noise didn't seem possible. We dined on $40 "fluffy" eggs in a huge bowl. They light, airy, heavenly delicious. I felt like a movie star.
