Cape Town Travel Guide: Reviews, photos, & videos

Cape Town is a melting pot. Take a pinch of Indonesian, Dutch French, British and German influences, mix a teaspoon of local Bushman and Hottentot tribes and then add a unique geography that includes towering mountains, white sand beaches, flowing rivers, sprawling and lush green country sides and – KABAM – taste the delicious and unique flavor served only in the Mother City of Africa. Don’t get hungry just yet though – there’s more. The second most populous city in South Africa, Cape Town is the legislative capital of South Africa and is currently the most popular destination in the region for tourism. And for good reason too. The most scenic spots in Cape Town (and there are a lot) tend to hover along the Cape Peninsula area. The white sandy beaches and unique flora create a breathtaking setting that rivals any Caribbean island. Be sure to head over to nearby Boulders for a unique look at the African Penguin Colony - yep, penguins in Africa.

For those wanting to get a birds (not penguins) eye view of this present day paradise, take a cable car to the top of the impressive Table Mountain and trek the two hours up the shortest route to the top of Platteklip George for some truly awe-inspiring views. And for the wine connoisseur, a tour of the Constantia Valley wine estates and the Cape Winelands provides a perfect way to spend a day or even a week. Any futbol fans out there – err- sorry, I mean, any soccer fans out there? Well, for the rabid sports fan make sure to check out African Renaissance Stadium, which will become a world wide hub when the World Cup arrives in 2010. With such an economic boom about to impact this gorgeous land, it only makes sense to plan that Cape Town vacation now – before the rest of the world catches on to this lands unique melting pot flavor. Mmm… delicious.

Table Mountain

Wanna find the best view in all of Cape Town? Well, Table Mountain’s got it! And thankfully, tourists don’t have to have superhuman climbing abilities to obtain this view! That’s because the Table Mountain Cableway will transport passengers from the bottom of the mountain to a level plateau about two miles wide at the top. Flanked by the awe inspiring Devil’s Peak on the east and the more serene Lion’s Head to the west, the plateau provides a dramatic view of Cape Town and Table Bay Harbor perfect for the budding photographer or the family in need of an updated portrait to hang above the fire place. For those looking to climb even higher, a trip up Platteklip Gorge provides a relatively easy ascent to the highest point at Maclear’s Beacon which rests a comfortable 3,563 feet above sea level (only about 62 feet higher than the cable station). Hiking, rock climbing, and even caving are allowed in the region as well – although it’s encouraged that a guide accompany the less experienced.

Wine lands in Cape Town

Other than a hearty sampling of delicious wines, a tour through the Cape Wine lands provides gorgeous mountain scenery, award winning restaurants, and a fascinating insight into the history of this abundant and plentiful land. The wine lands are divided into various different regions with each providing their own ‘wine route;’ however, the best known and most delicious wine lies in the storied reserves of Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, Wellington, Paarl and the Constantia Valley. Other than attending multiple wine tastings throughout the regions, there are multiple activities often recommended to those visiting for the first time. The lush scenery of Boschendal or Spier provides the perfect backdrop for a leisurely stroll with a loved one or a picnic with the whole family. For those with a sugary sweet tooth, the chocolaterie located on Franschhoek’s main street provides enough chocolatey concoctions to make Willy Wonka blush. And those wanting a bit more adventure can partake in one of the many horseback tours that lead visitors through these famous rolling vineyards. Don’t drink too much!

    Get Your Cape On

    08/11/2008

    90%

    Cape Town, South Africa

Ok, so it might take at least three flights to get there (and about 36 hours of traveling), but if you have the opportunity to go to South Africa… Pack your bags and get on it! A few things worth checking out: Shopping on Long Street (and eating there, too). The place is chockfull of interesting stores, many which feature affordable clothes by local designers (imagine coming home and nonchalantly telling your friends, “Yeah, I bought it in Africa.”). I’d also recommend the obligatory trip to the top of gorgeous Table Mountain (hike it if you have the time and energy). If breaking away from the fanny packs and tourist traps is more your speed, take the hour drive to Boulder Beach. The first thing you’ll notice (after the giant rocks surrounded by turquoise blue waters... hence the name Boulder Beach) are the wild penguins that thickly populate the beach. That’s right. Penguins in Africa. I posted a photo so you’d believe me. Just be warned: They aren’t necessarily as cute as you’d think from three feet away.

One visit to Cape Town is not enough

    08/04/2008

    100%

    Cape Town, South Africa

The big challenge in planning a visit to Cape Town is not what attractions to include – but what to leave out. I have visited this amazing city dozens of times and still find that each visit is not long enough to satisfy my curiosity or quiet my interest. For over four centuries this,”most beautiful Cape” has provisioned sailing ships plying the trade routes from Europe and the Americas to the Far East. The majestic outline of Table Mountain greets every visitor whether arriving by sea, road or air. History has been written here by Holland, France, Spain and England. My wife explains the appeal of Cape Town by suggesting that if you were suddenly placed on a city sidewalk here, you could listen to the accents, watch the traffic and the people and believe yourself in any one of dozens of major cities around the world. So, what to do on your first trip? Take the cable car to the top of Table Mountain and watch the sun set over the Atlantic Ocean as I did on my honeymoon. Spend a day at the incredible Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, which displays much of South Africa’s unique flora. Then taste the wine at High (Groot) Constantia estate, established in 1685 (!) by the Dutch Governor or the Cape. Take a ferry to Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for almost 27 years. See the Cape Penguin colony at the Boulders. Then you will begin to understand how necessary it is to return.
