Charleston Travel Guide: Reviews, photos, & videos

Often referred to as “The Holy City” “The Palmetto City” and even “Chucktown,” Charleston, South Carolina is a city that some how manages to be both relaxed and sophisticated while giving off an old-South vibe without the scorching heat. Located at the confluence of the Cooper and Ashley Rivers, Charleston is South Carolina’s fastest growing central city and was voted the “best-mannered” city back in 1995. Often compared to another southern paradise town Savannah, GA, Charleston is an ideal vacation destination for both domestic and international tourists thanks to its location to the water, pristine scenery and a historic downtown with many buildings still standing from the pre-civil war days. And with the Charleston real estate scene always fairly consistent, there are plenty of available Charleston vacation homes and various other vacation properties in Charleston (condos, high rises etc.).

For those looking to check out some of the gorgeous Charleston scenery, head over to the southern tip of the Charleston peninsula to The Battery – a park flanked by gorgeous, historic mansions along its rustic promenade. Then head over to the Charleston Museum to learn about the intriguing history of Charleston and its people. After that cruise by For Sumter – which is the tiny island best known for being where the civil war started. Although the actual Fort is in ruins there is a museum with several landmarks and markers that give all the fascinating details. Finally, check out the French Quarter to see some of the more prominent old churches in Charleston such as the St. Phillips Church and the French Huguenot Church.

Charleston: The City of Color & Cobblestone

    09/17/2009

    Charleston, SC, USA

Ah, Charleston! We meet again and this time I have brought my husband. It is September, 2009 and we are celebrating our fifth wedding anniversary. On the five hour flight over, I describe to my husband in detail the little houses similar in structure, yet every one a different color; pinks and blues interspersing lime greens and yellows, subtle violets and brilliant reds offsetting the gray of cobblestone streets. As a child, I could walk these streets for hours and find the same is true now. My husband is just as taken by them as I am, so we stroll, hand in hand, until the sun shifts above us and we're reminded of the time. "Don't we have a boat to catch?" he turns to me and asks. A boat to catch indeed, but oh, it is so much more than that! This boat not only provides a three hour cruise of the Charleston Harbor, but also a meal of four courses and live entertainment. We start with the She-Crab soup the 'Spirit of Carolina' is famous for, follow it up with Low Country Shrimp and Grits and finally end with a decadent Tiramisu. The next day, we decide to tour Patriot's Point Naval & Maritime Museum, home of the USS Yorktown and Clamagore Submarine. After that, we hit up the Charleston Farmer's Market in Marion Square where we splurge on baked bread and I buy a hand-painted brick depicting a local street scene. On our last day in Charleston---or ast evening, rather---my husband surprises me with a private carriage ride at twilight through some of the oldest and most colorful parts of the city. I pack my brick in my carry-on for the plane ride home; it will look perfect beside the front door of our apartment. "How soon," my husband asks me, "can we come back?"

    High Times in Low Country

We decided to take a laid back, Low Country style long weekend in Charleston. We planned to include the Camellia Festival at Magnolia Plantation and the Food and Wine Festival slated for the same time frame. I was unprepared for the immensity of Magnolia Plantation. Admittedly I am an avid gardener, so I could easily spend an entire day there. I looked forward to a leisurely walk through beautiful gardens appreciating monster sized oak trees and thousands of white camellias and I wasn’t disappointed. We did that. But there was more. There was a swamp garden, historic Drayton House, daily tours, a boat tour, a train and gardening lectures. I almost hated to leave, but heck we had wine to taste! So, it was on to the Food and Wine Festival. I know Bobby Flaye was at the festival but somehow we missed him. I guess we’ll only be seeing him on the Food Network. We tasted, we nibbled and tasted some more until we basically pooped out. So we decided to leave the crowds and enjoy our own bottle of wine in a quiet corner of charming Charleston.
