Portland Travel Guide: Reviews, photos, & videos

Portland is one of those “under the radar” cities that continues to grow in prominence each year even though its natural beauty and eclectic and bustling local arts scene never seem to wane. Recently proclaimed by Money magazine as North America’s “Best Big City,” Portland – or the “The City of Roses” as it’s often affectionately called – is a city that’s both modern and relevant while at the same time conveying the vibe of simpler times. Maybe it’s the compact and community friendly downtown; or maybe it’s the fact that a fifteen minute drive leads one to the gorgeous and green Oregon countryside. Seen as one of the most bike friendly places in the U.S. and having one of the most efficient light rail systems the world over, Portland allows it’s visitors unlimited access to it’s numerous attractions. Check out the Governor Tom McCall Waterfront Park – a wide expanse of green parkland that lies lazily along the downtown Portland waterfront and is unique in that it used to be an unsightly four lane highway.

For those who consider themselves music snobs (or just fans), Portland is home to some of the best established and up and coming bands making their name on pop culture today. Often referred to as the “indie-music” capital of the world, Portland’s downtown features a bevy of bars, pubs and music venues that helped make the name of such popular bands as The Decemberists, M. Ward and Modest Mouse. Those in need of a good shopping fix will find Portland a literal treasure trove of local shops, unique boutiques and higher end, wallet lightening stores. A few hours amongst the mercantile ware of Washington Square should satiate even the most passionate shopaholics. With its unique and eclectic sensibilities and proximity to the gorgeous Oregon country, it’s easy to see why many famous and successful celebrities and businessmen like Simpson’s creator Matt Groening and Nike CEO (whose headquarter lie just outside of Portland) Phil Knight choose to live here. Whatever the reason, people are quickly catching on to Portland both as a place to visit and as a place to live.

    Portland: My 'Starter City'

    09/13/2009

    92%

    Portland, OR, USA

Having never lived in a town of more than 20,000 people, I came to Portland not really knowing what to expect. That I should lock my door at night was a no brainer, but what about past the doors? Did I need a chaperone to go to the corner store for milk, or would that crazy man---who looks so much like Hagrid from Harry Potter, I can't understand why he's shouting at me---eventually become endearing as opposed to terribly frightening? The Park District, where I spent my first six months, is still my favorite part of the city. A pedestrian can begin at one end, just a few blocks from the infamous 'Powell's Books'---a massive four-story collection of new and used books---and pass skate-boarders, dog-walkers, young women peddling chocolates, homeless men, men in suits, the heavily dread-locked and skinny-panted hipsters, until finally most everyone is wearing a book-bag and checking tiny pocket calendars. Welcome to Portland State University. But it isn't all about the Park District. There's also the Pearl District; the Waterfront; Jake's Bar & Grill on SW 10th where, between the hours of 3:00 and 6:00pm and all day Sunday, you can get a half-pound burger and fries for two bucks. Then again, if you really want a view of the city---and I do mean the whole city---the Portland City Grill is the place to be. Located on the 30th floor of Unico Bank Tower in the heart of downtown, a patron can see all the way to Mount St. Helen's, one of the most breathtaking views in the state. Oh, and about that man on the street corner. You remember, the crazy Hagrid look-a-like? Turns out, all he ever wanted was some change and a spare cigarette. His name is Howard.

Frites to go in the Rose City

    10/22/2008

Portland has a stellar reputation as a Green city; the citizenry ride their bikes with determination and courtesy, using correct hand signals, lighting, and protective gear. Simultaneously, a sparkling mass transit system gets both local and visitor everywhere in style, and pizza is delivered in tiny electric cars. An offshoot of this wonderfully eco-friendly atmosphere is that a number of parking lots are now home to mobile food trucks. My personal favorite is close to home at SE 12th Street and Hawthorne Blvd. Visit here in the afternoons and evenings for Southern Barbecue, po’boys, and spaghetti; my personal favorite is the beautifully painted Potato Champion truck, dishing out Frites and Poutine for youthful revelers into the wee hours. The traditional Mexican taco truck here delivers a vegan chorizo burrito that is definitely a 21st century cyclist’s fuel. Eat up, and smile: lovingly homemade street food is here in the USA.

Burgerville Serves it with Love in PDX

Are you nostalgic for fast food, but feeling guilty? Cancel out the polarity with a trip to Burgerville, located throughout the Portland/Vancouver Metro area. Even as a vegetarian, I felt good about going to this model of sustainable business. Burgerville uses locally grown ingredients, participates in green business practices, and supports its employees with programs for affordable healthcare and tuition reimbursement. But what about the food? This week, I’ve had the seasonal delights of sweet potato fries, a blackberry smoothie, and a challengingly spicy Anasazi Bean Burger with chipotle mayonnaise and pepper jack cheese. Did I mention I go to power yoga before lunch? It might be time to have the wild smoked salmon and hazelnut salad on my next visit…smoked salmon? Hazelnut? In a burger joint? Yes, it’s true, and there’s a kids menu as well. Check out the fabulously informative website at www.burgerville.com.

    Portland's Panoply

    08/25/2008

    Portland, OR, USA

For years, my husband and I dreamt of exploring Portland, Oregon. A bicycle commuter in Cincinnati, he wanted to experience biking’s #1 city. Raves about Portland’s vibrant European-like downtown, efficient public transportation, and commitment to making the city accessible to older citizens had lured us. And no sales tax! Portland is cut in half by the Willamette River, the west side offering the main city center and the gentrified Pearl District, where Powell’s Bookstore spans blocks. The east side houses the Alberta Street arts district and the avant-garde Hawthorne District. We traveled by fareless streetcar and light rail and soared over the city on a 3-minute tram ride. We walked for miles on quirky Hawthorne Street and explored the trendy Portland Saturday Market. Though we never did get to bike because I got sick, next time our bikes will travel with us on the flight!
