Philadelphia Travel Guide: Reviews, photos, & videos
The great city of Philadelphia is often referred to as the Birthplace of America. It’s a fitting title given the sheer weight of history that has occurred upon its storied streets. No other city in America – with the exception of Boston and maybe New York City – is able to combine the past and present like Philly. Founded by William Penn in the late 17th century as a colony and safe haven for the Quakers, Philadelphia has long lived up to the literal translation of its name – The City of Brotherly Love. Now – let’s state the obvious first: Philadelphia is paradise for the history buff. So the first stop should be Independence National Historic Park! Featuring the tri-fecta of American historical sites – the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall and Constitution Hall (home of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution) – Independence National Historic Park provides a glimpse into the birthing pains of our great nation while pointing to the progress made since then.
Of course, Philly isn’t just old documents and feather pens. Why, it’s literally brimming over with modern day excitement. Ever seen a movie called Rocky? Well the famous statue and stairs Mr. Stallone conquers during the climactic training montage is still proudly on display and fans – young and old alike – make the trek up these stairs daily to be photographed with their hands held aloft like the revered Italian Stallion. Speaking of animals, the Philadelphia Zoo (America’s first zoo!) features just about every single animal one could ever want to see! And for those who consider themselves “shopping animals,” Philadelphia offers bountiful shopping venues like the higher end Shops at the Bellevue and the shops on South Street – which tends to lean towards the more cutting edge vintage vibe Philly’s becoming known for. And with over 152 distinct neighborhoods, Philadelphia provides great real estate for anyone ranging from the working class family (South Philly) to the successful singles and young couples (Manayunk and University City) and – of course – several up and coming hotspots like Northern Liberties and Fishtown. Seeing as how Philly is the birthplace of America, it only makes sense people start returning to their homeland!
