Philadelphia Travel Guide: Reviews, photos, & videos

The great city of Philadelphia is often referred to as the Birthplace of America. It’s a fitting title given the sheer weight of history that has occurred upon its storied streets. No other city in America – with the exception of Boston and maybe New York City – is able to combine the past and present like Philly. Founded by William Penn in the late 17th century as a colony and safe haven for the Quakers, Philadelphia has long lived up to the literal translation of its name – The City of Brotherly Love. Now – let’s state the obvious first: Philadelphia is paradise for the history buff. So the first stop should be Independence National Historic Park! Featuring the tri-fecta of American historical sites – the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall and Constitution Hall (home of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution) – Independence National Historic Park provides a glimpse into the birthing pains of our great nation while pointing to the progress made since then.

Of course, Philly isn’t just old documents and feather pens. Why, it’s literally brimming over with modern day excitement. Ever seen a movie called Rocky? Well the famous statue and stairs Mr. Stallone conquers during the climactic training montage is still proudly on display and fans – young and old alike – make the trek up these stairs daily to be photographed with their hands held aloft like the revered Italian Stallion. Speaking of animals, the Philadelphia Zoo (America’s first zoo!) features just about every single animal one could ever want to see! And for those who consider themselves “shopping animals,” Philadelphia offers bountiful shopping venues like the higher end Shops at the Bellevue and the shops on South Street – which tends to lean towards the more cutting edge vintage vibe Philly’s becoming known for. And with over 152 distinct neighborhoods, Philadelphia provides great real estate for anyone ranging from the working class family (South Philly) to the successful singles and young couples (Manayunk and University City) and – of course – several up and coming hotspots like Northern Liberties and Fishtown. Seeing as how Philly is the birthplace of America, it only makes sense people start returning to their homeland!

    History, Culture, and Cheesesteaks

While my grandfather was born in this town, I had yet to visit it until recently. Straight and to the point, ‘Philly’ is not for everyone; it can appear to some to be noisy, too urban, and often very traffic-infested. I know for a fact that my first impression was that it was no different from New York or Los Angeles. However, like New York and Los Angeles, I found myself enjoying the little things. The historical landmarks, particularly Independence Hall and the Constitution Center, are a must for any history buffs. The city may have it’s cultural districts and such, but my best experience was eating at Pat’s and Gino’s by the ballpark (ask a local and they’ll help you out!). Cheese steaks are no doubt the city’s legacy, but it’s not all that awaits newcomers. Not the most exciting city, it wouldn’t hurt to drop in to see.

    If Ben Franklin Were Gay...

…he would have loved the Philadelphia of today. First off, the city should be congratulated for blazing the trail when it comes to GLBT destination marketing. Almost every gay-focused tourism campaign has borrowed something from Philadelphia’s efforts. Sure, there is the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall and other landmarks that some might consider slightly significant to our country but look a little deeper and you’ll find a Philly full of surprises, both modern and historic. Next to Constitution Hall you’ll find a historical marker designating the spot where one of the first public protests for gay rights was held in 1965. Philadelphia is also home to the Equality Forum, an annual celebration of GLBT culture and accomplishment. After you’re finished with history and culture there is still plenty of fun to be had in the “gayborhood”, which is adorned with rainbow accented street signs.

    High Art and Hoagies

Tread the cobblestone pathways of Society Hill, or the well-manicured lawns of Independence Mall and you may hear the faint trumpeting of colonial days. History saturates Philadelphia, though not all of its traditions are mortared in brick or preserved in glass. At Lincoln Stadium, legions of unwavering fans tread fearlessly towards certain disappointment, all the while brandishing carefully articulated obscenities with the same fervor the Romans wielded their thumbs. At the Kimmel Center, Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Electric Factory, a current artistic inspiration electrifies the city, casting it prominently into the world of high art. And through it all a unique (and proudly un-Atkins) diet of cheese steaks, pretzels, and water ice remains as refined a staple as bouillabaisse and cassis are on the French Riviera. Philadelphia’s neighborhoods proudly display their colors, from the ritzy Rittenhouse Square, to the bohemian South Street, to the “queer without fear” Gayborhood in Washington Square West. Nothing, however, speaks more towards Philadelphia’s commitment to tradition than Boathouse row, where intricately strung sequences of LEDs adorn stone and timber gingerbread houses, casting the dark waters of the Schuylkill into a serenity reserved only for antique snow globes.
