Zurich Travel Guide: Reviews, photos, & videos

There’s a lot of money running through Zurich. Not only is it the commercial and cultural center of Switzerland – and of home of the Swiss bank account – but it’s also home to the stock exchange and headquarters of countless large national and international companies. Often voted one of the highest ranked cities in the world when it comes to living standards, Zurich isn’t just well loved for it’s proclivity to entice money; it’s known for it’s cleanliness and natural beauty. Located on the scenic Lake Zurich relatively close to the Swiss Alps, Zurich is often the first stop visitors make in Switzerland and is frequently dubbed “the portal to the Alps.” And as the largest city in Switzerland – with a population nearing a million – Zurich boasts plenty of attractions worthy of its esteemed financial system.

Those hoping to take advantage of Zurich’s fantastic natural scenery should check out Lake Promenade which provides visitors with a lengthy board walk and plenty of space to stretch out and enjoy a picnic or a nap. Zurich is also home to ancient architecture on par with some of the best in Italy or France. Check out the Grossmünster, Zwingliplatz – an aging Romanesque church built in 1519 – or Fraumünster, Kämbelgasse – which features some exquisite stained glass window paintings from the renowned artist Marc Chagall. Of course, the winter months mean skiing, and Zurich – with its already mentioned proximity to the Alps – is a great base camp for the eager skier and snowboarder. Wanna get a great view of Zurich without having to scale the Alps? Well take a ride aboard the Polybahn – a 19th century funicular that takes visitors to an elevated point for a breathtaking 360 degree view of the city. And for the woman (or man) with taste for the finer things in life, shopping at the Bahnhofstrasse – famous for being one of the most exclusive and expensive shopping streets in the entire world – will satiate any shopping itch one might have.

    Southern detour to Alpine bliss...

    03/16/2009

    95%

    Zurich, Switzerland

Less than an hour’s drive south of Zurich is the town of Lucerne. This quaint little location is encircled by the breathtaking Alpine mountain landscape and located on the coast of Lake Lucerne, with green rolling hills and forests in between. This is definitely a nice escape from the larger tourist cities in Switzerland. I visited the touching Lion Monument carved into the sandstone quarry hill and the still original Kapellbrücke wooden bridge, admiring the pristine waters and scenery all around. The water is so clean, you can drink straight from the fountains and you often see folks scooping a bottle-full now and again. My most memorable moment was riding the aerial cableway to Mount Pilatus, aka Dragon Mountain. Although it was slightly drizzling that day and we couldn’t see the entire panorama, I was sufficiently amused by the cows that were grazing up and down the mountain. Thoughts of running up and down the green hills like Heidi came to mind and although we couldn’t see the cows at first, we could hear their collar bells from afar. It was definitely a fun and relaxing detour trip to this little Swiss town.

The Bluest Blue of the Blue Danube

    09/04/2008

    100%

    Zurich, Switzerland

Several years ago I found myself on the worst flight to Europe ever. My flight was supposed to be Dulles to Brussels, Brussels to Budapest, and Budapest to Bucharest. (Yes, sadly, that was the optimal flight.) But when my flight left Dulles three hours late, and I missed my connection in Brussels, I found myself bouncing around Europe in a way never before seen. The redeeming quality about this trip was that I suddenly ended up on an eight hour layover in Zurich. Having already been traveling for over 12 hours, and completely unprepared for a day trip into Zurich, I boarded public transit, left the airport, and got off the train when it looked like I was in the heart of the city. Was I in the heart of the city? I have no idea. And I don't care. What greeted me when I got off the train was a breathtaking blue sky reflected in the even more beautiful blue river flowing through the city. The legendary Swiss Alps nestle the city in with dramatic vistas I will never forget. I was unprepared. I had no idea what to do. And I had no local currency (something I hadn't thought to do before leaving the airport). So I just took off on foot to see what there was to see. It was the best 8 hours I have ever spent. I stood in awe of the magnificent carved chapel doors. I watched and laughed as young boys jumped into the river. And I couldn't get enough of the pure mountain water pouring from the ancient city fountains. As I walked along the city streets I could easily envision fairy tales taking place along the banks of the Zurichsee (river). I wanted to walk through the squares holding hands with the perfect man. I wanted my day to never end. But end it did, and I went back to the airport, and left for Bucharest. When the travel crazies finally ended and I looked around Bucharest all I could think was how could two cities be so similar (build in the same centuries), and yet, be so completely different. Every year I ask myself if this is the year I will return to Zurich and do it right. Every year something has kept me from returning. But that hasn't stopped me from returning there frequently in my dreams.
