    Bathing beauties in Budapest

    03/14/2009

    100%

    Budapest, Hungary

Hot soothing waters swirled around me as I bobbed up and down next to some Speedo-clad Eastern European gentlemen. I scanned the crowd for my husband, who’d gone to arrange for our massages. We were partaking of the famed mineral baths in Budapest, but not at the tourist-friendly hotel versions. We rode the Metro out to the edge of the Pest side of the city to Szechenyi Furdo and fumbled our way through the Byzantine process of buying the (incredibly cheap) tickets, changing, and locking up our belongings — after pausing outside the dramatic yellow buildings outside to snap photos. We made our way through the progressively hotter baths inside until we worked our way to the outdoor pool, a fantastic confection in which white-haired locals played chess. The blue of the healing waters perfectly matched the luminous sky. Fatigue and jet lag slipped away. We took our Hungarian massages and glided out, slightly bruised but buoyant. The next day we scratched our sightseeing plans for a return visit to the baths. Who needs a park full of communist statues when you can steep in mineral water?

    Beat That, Paris

    Budapest, Hungary

I've spend time in Paris, London and New York, but Budapest will always be my favorite city in the world to go for a walk. Why? One word. Sucarazde. These tiny sweet shops are EVERYWHERE in the city and they will serve you, hands down, some of the most delicious confections you have every been lucky enough to put in your mouth. Most importantly, there is reites, the flaky filled pastry that puts the French croissant to shame. They'll try and make you choose between makos (poppyseed) and toro (sweetened cheese). Don't choose. Get a slice of both. There is also thick, custardy ice cream in a million flavors and hot tea and tiny crepes filled with chocolate sprinkles. Get it to go. Munch on it as you stroll through the city, admiring some of the zaniest, most eccentric and eclectic statuary you will ever see. And please--don't be afraid to stop for a second helping, or a third. Some sucarazdes put lemon peel in their toro, others put rosewater in their makos, still others will offer you tchipka (rosehip) jam with fresh bread. Every place is different, and there's one on every block. You'll want to make sure to try them all.
