Denver Travel Guide: Reviews, photos, & videos

Often times referred to as the “Mile-High City,” Denver truly does have an altitude of 5,280 feet which is measured and marked – for posterity sake – by a gold band embedded in the steps of the state capitol. With a population of just under 580,000 and 3 million in the great metro area, Colorado’s capital city is a fast paced but laid back, business savvy yet culture friendly town replete with quirky neighborhoods, a fast growing economy and a thriving arts scene all set against the stunning backdrop of the gorgeous Rocky Mountains. With unlimited access to the mountains for the ski and snowboard enthusiasts and absolutely gorgeous summer weather (perfect for hiking and bike riding), Denver truly is a city with something for everyone. And with such pristine real estate in Denver, there are always available deals on Denver mountain homes or various other types of vacation properties in Denver.

Within the downtown Denver area there’s plenty of fun times to be found! The Denver Museum of Nature and Science, the Denver Zoo and the Chamberlin Observatory (built in 1890) are all fascinating attractions perfect for the science or history buff, and the nearby Children’s Museum of Denver is perfect for giving the kiddos something fun and educational to enjoy. For those wanting to embrace the stunning Denver scenery, head over to Washington Park which features gorgeous lakes, flower gardens as well as a recreation center, soccer fields and tennis court all on 160 acres of pristine land surrounded by stunning 19th century houses. And for the sports fans, Denver is home to four major sports teams: the Denver Broncos, Colorado Rockies, Denver Nuggets, and the Colorado Avalanche. Clearly Denver has everything anyone could ever want in a capital town, and thankfully it still remains fairly laid back. In other words, it might be known as the “mile high city,” but Denver is still “down to earth.”

    Downtown Denver

Driving from the Denver airport into the downtown area looks much like Dorothy’s trip on the Yellow Brick Road towards Oz. The striking, tall structures seem to rocket straight up out of the surrounding, flat terrain. Despite the skyscrapers, the city is as laid back and calm as a California beach town. The quiet Light Rail keeps pedestrians off their feet for their travels up and down 16th and California streets. Just keep an eye out for it, as you may not hear it!

Much of the action takes place around the 16th Street Mall, but don’t plan on driving in for the fun-- foot/bike traffic only. Downtown Denver has very little congestion, and you might stay an entire week without hearing a single car horn’s honk. Locals who need to get where they are going quickly are more likely to be seen on a bike or a Vespa.

While in Denver, take a stroll and enjoy zero humidity, make a discounted spa appointment at the Aveda Institute, but be sure to book in advance as they fill up! Enjoy foods you’ve never dreamt of, such as Elk Medallions and Rattlesnake, at the famous Buckhorn Exchange and go see a Rockies game! If nothing else, sample a delicious microbrew in the “the Napa Valley of beer.”

The list of things to do and see in Denver is at least a “mile-high,” and if you ever get lost just look to the Rocky Mountain range, that is always considered west.

    Darting Through The Denver Arts

The Denver Art Museum has now become a museum piece in its own right. Designed by world famous artist Daniel Libeskind, the jarring edges of the "boat" sticks out over the roads and flies high over surrounding buildings. It seems to point to all the great places to go in the city, directing traffic in a way. One of the pathways, you can take is across the street to the Colorado History Museum or down the road to Civic Center Park, where you can catch the latest protest or politician. Here, at Civic Center park, you can meander throughout the State Capital building or head to the fountain at the other end of the park, where you may catch the latest festival attendees bathing in the water. Without suits. Children beware. This part of Denver can be a mix of art, government and the hippie lifestyle. You just never know which one you'll get on which day of the week.
