Vienna City Center Travel Guide: Reviews, photos, & videos
Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy are two young, sexy people falling in love in one night in Vienna. This is the plot of movie Before Sunrise: an ode to young love and a gorgeous love letter to the delightful city of Vienna. While this film might serve as inspiration in drawing folks to Austria’s capital, the majesty of this joyous city will be what keeps them coming back. Located in eastern Austria close to the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary, Vienna is considered the cultural, economic, and political center of Austria and was voted as having the second highest quality of living in the world in 2008. Visitors to Vienna will find it nearly impossible to not fall in love with the cobblestone walkways, inspirational and ancient architecture and fascinating history written into every street corner and back alley way. A visit to the Maria-Theresa-Square will showcase several architecturally magnificent museums located right across the street from one another. The Kunsthistorisches and its neighbor the Naturhistorisches both showcase ancient paintings from world class masters and are considered iconic establishments in Vienna.
And right across the street is the stunning Hofburg - location of the Schatzkammer, which contains the shimmering imperial jewels of the Habsburg dynasty. Want to see some old school palaces? The Hofburg palace is a medieval castle that now houses and offices the Austrian president and is open to the public for tours and sightseeing. A visit to the Karlskirche showcases the largest baroque cathedral north of the Alps, and a quick trip over to the Stephansdom displays a unique Gothic style and features some of the finest works of art in all of Vienna as well as an amazing view of Vienna atop the observation deck of its North Tower. And while one can easily see many of the sites alone, it’s highly advised to be accompanied by an experienced and knowledgeable guide due to Vienna’s unique and complicated history. For instance, most people folks believe the origin of vampires was started in Romania; however, part of the origin developed right in the middle of Vienna when an aging woman of the elite noble class began forcing her servants to kill and draw blood from homeless people. Why you ask? She felt that drinking human blood made her look younger. Gross! They should turn that into a movie!
