Las Vegas Travel Guide: Reviews, photos, & videos

Long before Vince Vaughn and the movie Swingers launched the expression “Vegas Baby!” into the pop culture zeitgeist, this famous (and infamous) town has used its neon lights and the promises of “big money” to lure people in from all over the world. With millions of dollars changing hands every day, dozens of broad way worthy entertainment venues within walking distance and enough opulence, decadence and lavishness to rival the Romans, Las Vegas – or "Sin City" as it’s often dubbed - provides an experience unlike any place on earth. It’s often tough to remember that what’s known as The Entertainment Capital of the World used to be a small settlement in the middle of the desert. Founded in 1905, Vegas is the most populous city in Nevada and is of course best known for the Vegas Strip – a four mile strip of land on Vegas Boulevard where the lions share of the casinos, resorts and entertainment complexes cast their alluring neon lights.

Interested in winning (or losing) a few grand in a couple of hours - check out any of the high rolling casinos like the Bellagio (as seen in Oceans 11), the MGM Grand, the Mirage or Mandalay Bay. Wanna experience some world class entertainment? With the likes of Cirque De Soleil, Blue Man Group and Celine Dion putting on shows nightly, Vegas easily rival Los Angeles and New York in terms of top quality entertainment. And although some might beg to differ, there’s much more to do in Las Vegas than just gamble and party. Most people don’t know that Las Vegas is home to some of the best climbing in America. For the fitness buff or the climbing junkie, check out Red Rock Canyon located on the western edge of the city for some of the best traditional and sport routes in the United States. And for those looking to get another type of adrenaline fix, make sure to check out the roller coaster at New York-New York or the Stratosphere (which provides the best view of the city). A vibrant economy leading to constant population growth made Vegas one of the highest appreciating real estate markets during the boom years. More recently, Vegas real estate has dropped like a rock creating a bargain hunter’s dream. Vegas baby! Cha-ching!

    Forget the Fear and Loathing

Ah, Vegas. It is perhaps the tackiest of American cities, yet this unabashed monument to American crassness has a special place in my heart. Las Vegas is in your face, overt, and rude – in other words, a whole lot of fun. A step out the door takes on elements of a psychedelic trip, or perhaps a circus. You may encounter sequined strippers, silk breasted con men, voluptuous cross dressers juxtaposed with camera-clad European tourists and backdrops of Egyptian pyramids, medieval castles, and Venetian manors. Vegas specializes in creating fake approximations for monetary benefit, and yours as well: I can spend hours wandering around the city's cavernous and impeccably designed casinos. Each palace seems to topple the one before: Treasure Island's pirate show! Man-eating tigers at the Mirage! Live lions at MGM Grand! Laser-fountain show at the Bellagio! Are you not entertained, or at least overwhelmed? If the tricks and clicks don’t make you squeal with delight, try an actual circus. I love the transcendent and artistic performances of Cirque du Soleil, which seems to be launching a takeover of Vegas's entertainment industry. Siegfried and Roy may be no more, but Criss Angel, Wayne Newton, and endless Elvis impersonators are happy to step in on the entertainment front. If you have extra change to spend and you’re done with the slots and the circus, check out Caesar's Forum Shops and the Venetian's emporium. All the luxury casinos have designer boutiques. Vegas is a pit stop of high-fashion afflicted with money to burn, and why else would you be here anyway if you can’t pretend? Even Europe’s finest chefs trip to the glittery climes. The super-exclusive French Michelin guide awarded two star ratings to three restaurants in Sin City, although only Joel Robuchon's temple of epicurean delights garnered the coveted three star rating. What does this mean for your taste buds? An embarrassment of delights to the gourmand – and wine lists to match. Of course, all of the pomp may very well turn your towards the famed 5 dollar Vegas buffet. At the end of the acid dream your wallet will be happy it’s alive and well. I wouldn't miss it for the world.

    Bring Your Imagination!

Ah…Las Vegas. Vegas is a city that has created a unique experience that keeps businesses thriving with repeat visitors. I have never stayed there longer than 3 days, and it always seems to be just enough time. It can be hard sometimes, since they serve free alcohol to me from beautiful women who roam the casino floors like ants. I love going to Vegas because everyone is someone else and everyone is looking to meet someone else. It is an adventure going from hotel to hotel without having to step foot outside and not knowing what or who I’ll find next. I don’t gamble much, so I let myself wander. The best night I ever had in Vegas was on my 21st birthday when I wandered into a jazz bar and sat next to a single woman about ten years older than me. She turned out to be part owner of the bar. I learned so many things that night. I have many pictures of Vegas, but they will never leave my computer. I invite you to take a look at the picture below, look at all those lights and imagine all the fun you could have.

    Can be surprisingly inexpensive

There are plenty of free things to see and do in Las Vegas if you want to have a good time and keep your wallet closed. Many casinos have free attractions that anyone can enjoy. Check out the lion enclosure at MGM Grand, the water show at the Bellagio, the pirate battle at Treasure Island or the performers at Circus Circus. The Bellagio conservatory has beautiful horticultural displays that vary with the season. Get to downtown Las Vegas in the evening to see the Freemont Street Experience – a brilliant light and sound show over a few blocks. Most casinos offer free lessons on a variety of games to those staying in their hotel. Join the casino club or rewards programs and you are often given free slot play or other perks just for signing up. You don’t need to shell out $150 for show tickets to have a great time.

    I'm Going Again in October!

I've managed to experience Vegas once as a child with my parents, and once as a "grown up" with friends. Staying at the Mirage the first time, there was more than enough to see and do. From white tigers and water rides to magic shows and shopping, I left the city knowing I’d come back… Then I did…about a year ago. Friends and I stayed at the Flamingo (where we’re 98% sure we saw Morgan Freeman). Being 21, we basically hit every casino, but found our home at the Old Strip with cheap blackjack and affordable steak and lobster meals, not to mention the Freemont Street light show. As cliché as it may sound, the city really is one gigantic party. Everybody wants to have a good time whether it’s through meeting new people, indoor roller coasters, losing money quickly, watching performances, or drinking from a souvenir cup!

    What happens in Vegas...

Sin City, the Adult Disneyland, the Entertainment Capital of the World - these are nicknames that around the world conjure visions of grand casinos and megaresorts; spectacular production shows and world-class shopping; excitement and excess - an image Las Vegas wholeheartedly embraces. From its humble beginnings at the turn of the century as a railroad town and small casino outpost, Las Vegas has achieved heights over the past few decades previously thought inconceivable for an arid, desert climate. The city has transformed into one of the country's top vacation destinations, attracting an eclectic group of travelers, from newlyweds to retirees alike. Stroll down the renowned Las Vegas Boulevard, play a round of golf at the award-winning Wynn resort, take a day-trip to the historic Hoover Dam or watch one of the six spell-binding Cirque du Soleil shows offered on the “Strip”- Vegas offers a little glitz and glamour for everyone.

    Las Vegas Strip

One of the most famous streets in the world is Las Vegas Boulevard, also known as the Las Vegas Strip. Think of any movie that you’ve seen in Las Vegas, and it inevitably focuses on the gambling, showgirls, all mixed in with glamorous shots of the strip. There are so many events to see on this Strip. The Bellagio Casino has a famous fountain in the midst of an 8-acre artificial lake. This fountain has sprays of water that are synchronized to music, and this special show occurs every fifteen minutes from 8PM to midnight. The Mirage casino has a similar attraction with a volcano. This is an artificial job that is in the midst of a small artificial lake that starts to froth at every hour. By the time the little show is over, there are some impressive flames that miraculously come out of the water like lava. Yes sir, the Strip is something that everyone should see, what more can I say?
