Key Biscayne Travel Guide: Reviews, photos, & videos

Sometimes a remote Caribbean island can be a bit too remote. In the same respects, a busy cityscape can have too many distractions. Thankfully a fair compromise has been found: meet Key Biscayne. Located just southeast of Miami, Key Biscayne is a tropical island village nestled comfortably in the center of a four mile-long, two-mile wide barrier island between Biscayne Bay and the mighty Atlantic Ocean. Technically the first island in the Florida Keys, Key Biscayne is connected directly by the causeway to the mainland of Miami about seven miles away and features some of the most gorgeous beach front property found in the United States. It’s perfect for those who seek solace and solitude of a semi-secluded island but at the same time occasionally need the rush and release of the fast paced Miami nightlife. Essentially – it’s the best way to be in Miami without actually having to be in Miami.

Spend a relaxing day filling in those tan lines at the laid back Crandon Park. Located in the northern region of Key Biscayne, Crandon Park – with its three and a half miles of soft sandy beach and calm, teal waters - is perfect for families with active kiddos or the seasoned couple celebrating in the twilight of their lives. Not far away is Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Recreation Area which provides the same standard of beautiful beaches and also features tours of the nearby Cape Florida lighthouse and rents out kayaks, rollerblades and surf boards for this interested in a bit more activity. And inherent with the pristine setting is a plethora of top shelf golf and tennis courses just waiting to be enjoyed. With vacation homes and condos sprouting up like Florida grass in summer time, Key Biscayne is quickly becoming a hot vacation and second home destination. So for anyone in need of a place appeals to the introverted and extroverted side in all of us, Key Biscayne is the perfect place.

Cape Florida State Park

Brings new meaning to the words surf and turf. Situated on just over a mile of soft, sandy beachfront, Cape Florida State Park offers all the usual park activities: bicycling, fishing, picnic areas, bird watching, and body surfing…need I go on? Cape Florida State Park, however, also has one tall claim to fame (hint: it’s not the beach!). It’s a centuries old lighthouse originally built back in 1825 and then reconstructed in 1846. It is also the oldest structure in all of Miami-Dade County! On Mondays - Thursdays, at select times, you can even take a tour of both the lighthouse and the lighthouse keeper’s tidy cottage. When not gawking at the lighthouse, drop a line off the seawall and try to reel in a big one!

Explore the Oldest Building in South Florida

That's right, Key Biscayne is home to the oldest building in South Florida – the Cape Florida Lighthouse. Give those quadriceps a workout as you climb up top to the lantern room and get a bird's eye view of Bill Baggs State Park, then head back down (that's a lot of stair climbing!) and spend some time enjoying the beach. Want to do a little kayaking? Head out for a trip in Biscayne Bay where you'll paddle alongside dolphins. Next on the agenda is a short nature walk through the mangroves. Whew! That's a lot of outdoor recreation! While this is mainly a day use park, you can camp on your boat in No Name Harbor and enjoy a night out under the stars, rounding out a perfect overnight or weekend trip. Make your way out to Key Biscayne!
