France Travel Guide: Reviews, photos, & videos

Did you know that France is the world’s most popular tourist destination with over 78 million people alone visiting in 2006? When you think about the vast amount of rich history and culture and the unbelievable natural beauty of the entire country – well, then I guess it starts to make more sense. First stop should always be Paris – the city of lights and love. Then, why not check out the golden sand beaches of Nice? Sounds nice! And why not top it off with a tinge of decadence at the stunningly gorgeous Cannes (heard there was a pretty cool film festival held there every year). Then think about the France real estate scene. With a bevy of French vacation properties and France vacation homes, there are plenty of ways to stay in France in luxury, style and – of course – affordability.

For those hoping to soak up some sun on the gorgeous beaches in France, make sure to check out the aforementioned Nice which is located along the French Riviera and is best known for the stunning view of the light blue waters along the stunning Promenade des Anglais. Then venture just a few miles away to the cozy Juan-Les-Pins and admire the sunset on the balmy, palm tree covered shores of the Mediterranean Sea. Then make a trip over to the second most populated city in France – Marseille – and enjoy the bustling harbor and vibrant shopping scene. And for the literary buff, take the ferry out to the small island known as the Château d’If, which is where Alexandre Dumas set much of the prison portion of his famous novel the Count of Monte Cristo! So now does France as the "most popular tourist destination in the world" make sense?

    Provence nights

    03/18/2009

    100%

    France

Our salad arrived at midnight, dished out by our new friend Michel. Thoroughly tipsy from too many pastis, we dug in like miners – the baguette sandwiches at noon but a faint camembert-scented memory. As I plunged into the freshest of greens, tomatoes, beet root and boiled potatoes dressed in olive oil and sunflower oil – Provence in a bowl – I mentally shook my head at the situation we found ourselves in. In our week in the tiny village of Jonquière we’d become friends with the proprietor of the local bar, thanks to some British expats we’d met the first night who took us there for drinks. Michel had joined us at our sidewalk café where he played the guitar and serenaded us with a soulful French ballad. We returned daily for our morning coffee and afternoon pastis – the stiff, refreshing licorice-flavored drink cleared the summer Provencal dust from the throat like nothing else. Despite my feeble French, and my husband and Michel’s monolingualism in their respective languages, we got along famously. By the end of the week we were bon ami, and Michel insisted on cooking us dinner. Though we delighted in lavender-scented days spent sightseeing in Provence, it is our midnight dinner at chez Michel that my mind conjures up when I dream of France.

    There's always more to do...

    France

Millions of tourists flock to this country of romantic fervor and it is ranked as the number one tourist destination in the world. No surprise that I love to travel throughout France, although Paris is the center that offers the most popular points of art and cultural interest. My favorite was the Pompidou Centre, where I always see something new and never get tired of exploring the vast exhibition center. The building itself is an artwork with magnificent views of the city from the top floor as well. Despite the occasional stepping into poop on the streets of Paris, I still danced the Champs Elysee on the Champs Elysee and have no shame! France also offers seaside resorts and beaches for a more quiet and relaxing trip as well as the rural landscape and small towns where a road trip would best suit your traveling plans. You can visit vineyards and picnic along the hills to enjoy the epitome of country lifestyle. I’ve been to the major cities and attractions but still ready for more…
